Building Design

Whilst the outward appearance of a building is normally designed by an Architect, the design of a building is more than ‘skin deep’ and relies on its foundations, structural walls, floors, roof and overall structural framing to make it a safe environment to live in.

Apart from the technical aspects of designing the supporting elements of a building, Mother Nature also plays a part. Wind and snow influence the size of roof members and wind influences wall panel sizes. The weather often has an influence on how deep the foundations are, particularly in areas with clay subsoil. Ambient temperatures influence the use of expansion joints to prevent the building cracking. The natural geological strata also affects the depth and type of foundations to ensure stability.

All of the above factors have to be examined  carefully when undertaking the design of a building, hence the importance of appointing a Structural Engineer for your project.
